Chicago Fire FC and Atlanta United FC played to a dramatic 2-2 draw Wednesday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Philip Zinckernagel starred for the Fire, scoring just seconds into the match and later assisting Maren Haile-Selassie’s goal in the second half. Zinckernagel’s early strike came directly from a low-driven corner kick that bounced into the net, giving Chicago a surprise lead. Atlanta equalized in the 56th minute through Alexey Miranchuk, who finished a swift counterattack.
Chicago briefly regained the lead in the 79th minute after Haile-Selassie weaved through the box and fired home, set up by Zinckernagel and Andrew Gutman. However, the Fire couldn’t hold on, as Atlanta found a late equalizer deep into stoppage time. A deflected corner led to midfielder Will Reilly scoring from close range, preventing Atlanta from suffering a fourth home loss this season. The result leaves Chicago with 29 points and Atlanta at 20 in the MLS standings.
