The Chicago Fire secured a narrow 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls at Soldier Field, improving their record to 10-9-5 with 35 points. Hugo Cuypers scored his 14th goal of the season, which proved to be the match-winner, while goalkeeper Chris Brady notched his seventh win and second consecutive shutout of the year. The result also allowed Chicago to leapfrog New York in the standings, with the Red Bulls falling to 9-10-6 and 33 points.
Chicago started the match on the front foot, taking eight shots in the first half and consistently pressuring the Red Bulls’ defense. Late in the half, Cuypers drew a handball in the box, earning a penalty which he calmly converted to give his team a 1-0 lead at halftime. His composed finish gave the Fire the advantage going into the break and highlighted his crucial role in the team’s attacking success.
In the second half, the Red Bulls increased their attacking intensity and created several close chances. However, Chris Brady’s three saves and Chicago’s organized defense ensured another clean sheet. This marked the second time in four games that Chicago shut out New York. The Fire now have a week off before hosting Los Angeles FC at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois.
