The Chicago Stars suffered a 1-2 loss to the Houston Dash in their home opener, despite some key player returns. Defender Sam Staab made her first start since recovering from a season-ending injury, while forward Ludmila returned from a three-match suspension. The Stars also saw their first goal of the season, with Jameese Joseph scoring, assisted by Bea Franklin. Despite the loss, the team showed resilience with strong performances from both returning players and newcomers.

From the start, the Stars came out aggressive, pressing high on Houston and forcing turnovers. The Dash, however, had a close chance early when a shot hit the post, followed by another attempt that went wide after a diving save from Alyssa Naeher. Chicago continued to press but were unable to capitalize on their chances in the first half. It wasn’t until the 17th minute that they took the lead, with Joseph seizing a loose ball outside the box, dribbling in, and scoring a low shot past Houston’s goalkeeper, Jane Campbell.

The lead didn’t last long, as Houston quickly equalized in the 20th minute. After a corner kick from Bárbara Olivieri, Messiah Bright played the ball to Paige Neilsen, who tied the match 1-1. The remainder of the first half saw both teams create opportunities, but neither could break the deadlock. The Stars fought to maintain control, with Joseph continuing to be a focal point of their offensive efforts.

In the second half, Houston took the lead in the 64th minute after a miscalculation with the offside trap allowed Maggie Graham to score. Despite protests from Chicago regarding Graham’s positioning, a brief VAR review confirmed the goal was legitimate. Chicago continued to fight back, with Micayla Johnson providing a spark off the bench, but her efforts fell short as her shots either were saved or missed the target. The Stars now look ahead to their next match against Racing Louisville FC on March 30, as they seek their first win of the season.
